A Tenant May Have Multiple Emotional Support Animals
FACTS:
An applicant has informed the property management company that she has three (3) emotional support animals.
ISSUE:
Can a tenant have more than one (1) emotional support animal?
ANSWER:
See discussion.
DISCUSSION:
Housing discrimination against persons with disabilities is prohibited under federal law. For individuals with disabilities, a tenant may have more than one support animal so long as each support animal alleviates one or more of the identified symptoms or effects of an existing disability.
Note: Acceptable forms the housing provider may ask for include documentation from a physician, psychiatrist, social worker, or other mental health professional that the animal provides emotional support that alleviates one or more of the identified symptoms or effects of an existing disability.
