“I get shivers when I see a bunch of REALTORS® who show up and then make such great sense!”
Carol Anne Warren – Arizona Adobe Group Realty (Cottonwood)

Held September 10 in Scottsdale, the 2009 REALTOR® Caucus produced high energy and thoughtful ideas on how to continue to advance the REALTOR® agenda in Arizona.

Tom Farley, AAR CEO, and Meghaen Duger, VP – Government Affairs, kicked off the event with a wrap-up of the 49th Legislature’s First Regular Session and a look ahead at what 2010 might hold. Attendees then broke up into five regional groups to discuss legislative issues facing their businesses. When the groups joined together again, regional representatives provided short overviews of the items addressed. Over lunch, Arizona Department of Real Estate (ADRE) Commissioner Judy Lowe shared her goals for the department with the crowd.

Policy matters raised at the event now will go to the Legislative & Political Affairs Committee for review. Below is a brief summary of some of those policy items:
  1. Support the ADRE’s move from a four-year to a two-year license at renewal. The current four-year license fails to provide sufficient revenues to the department and causes dramatic swings in revenue. These swings require fees to be increased or decreased annually, regardless of departmental operating costs. Consequently, depending on the year, a licensee could pay significantly less than a licensee renewing their license the following year.

  2. Support ADRE in increasing professionalism in the industry, including increasing continuing education requirements. More details will follow.

  3. Continue to monitor anti-deficiency laws. The banks have requested that the governor’s office revisit this issue next Special Session.

  4. Monitor the Arizona Corporation Commission and policies being implemented there. Assist in reinstating free footage policy.
  5. Work on numerous disclosure issues (shared wells, short sales, road abatement, etc.).
